“Arthurs Fen Sticks”

Hand crafted to your exact requirements by

Arthur Towler

Arthur’s unique Fen Walking Sticks are produced from bog oak and yew found in the Fens to the east of Ely in Cambridgeshire.

This wood has in most instances been buried in the dark peat of the Fens for more than 12,000 years, from a time when the area south of the Wash was just impassable swamps, bogs and marshes.Since their drainage between the 17th and 19th Centuries the land has fallen under the plough, with it many old remnants of the past have started to appear. Even bog oak and yew with axe marks made by early stone age man have been found by farmers in Arthur’s area.

Arthur discovered his talent for carving fairly recently, but has always enjoyed and been close to the type of wild life he often depicts throughout his working life. On farmland, in forests and even at sea he has become familiar with many species and as a result brings real lifelike qualities to much of his work.

Arthur discovered his talent for carving fairly recently, but has always enjoyed and been close to the type of wildlife throughout his working life that he now often depicts in his carvings. On farmland, in forests and even at sea he has become familiar with many species and as a result brings real life like qualities to much of his work.

As well as wild life Arthur is often commissioned to provide sticks depicting family animals and pets. So please feel free to speak to Arthur or Sylvia Towler about what products may be available.
